The robotics cluster gets the headlines; health care and education carry the payroll. BLS figures are for the Pittsburgh, PA metro. The UPMC figure is system-wide, not metro-only.
Robotics job titles decoded
"Robotics engineer" covers a dozen different jobs. Pittsburgh postings usually name the layer of the stack instead. Here is what each family does, so employers can write a sharper search and job seekers can search the right titles.
Turn camera, lidar and radar data into a model of the world: detection, tracking, mapping, localization. Typical titles: perception engineer, ML engineer, research scientist. Most hires come with graduate work or shipped models behind them.
Decide what the robot or vehicle does next and make the hardware do it. Strong candidates combine controls or optimization theory with production C++. Titles include planning engineer, controls engineer and autonomy engineer.
The plumbing: middleware such as ROS, simulation, data pipelines, embedded Linux, build and deployment tooling. This is where general software engineers most often cross into robotics.
Mechanical, electrical and mechatronics engineers design the arms, sensors, power systems and enclosures. Technologists and technicians build, wire and repair prototypes.
Requirements, test plans, safety cases and test-track or simulation validation. Automotive and trucking autonomy programs often ask for functional-safety experience such as ISO 26262.
Run robots and vehicles at test sites and customer locations, log failures and feed them back to engineering. These roles are often open to technicians and operators without a four-year degree.
Pay benchmarks
Median annual wages for the Pittsburgh metro from the federal Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey. Pittsburgh pays below the national median for most of these jobs, and far below the coasts: software developers have a $124,500 median here against $213,110 in San Jose, $186,640 in San Francisco, $167,280 in Seattle and $166,090 in Boston (same survey, same year).

Medians cover all employers and experience levels; pay at a given company can sit well above or below them. For comparison, the national medians are $135,980 for software developers, $120,630 for electrical engineers, $104,110 for mechanical engineers and $97,550 for registered nurses (BLS, May 2025). Where the work is
Pittsburgh's tech employers cluster along the rivers close to the universities, while hospitals and manufacturers spread across the county and up the I-79 corridor. Commutes are short by big-city standards, but bridges and tunnels decide them, so ask candidates about their route, not just their mileage.
The stretch along the Allegheny River from the Strip to Lawrenceville is known as Robotics Row. Aurora, the self-driving truck company, is headquartered in the Strip; Carnegie Mellon's National Robotics Engineering Center and Innovation Works' Robotics Factory are in Lawrenceville.
Home to Carnegie Mellon, whose Robotics Institute was founded in 1979 and started the first robotics PhD program, and the University of Pittsburgh. UPMC's listed address is 200 Lothrop Street here, so research, clinical and academic medical jobs concentrate in the neighborhood.
A 178-acre former steel site on the Monongahela. Mill 19 houses the Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing (ARM) Institute, a defense-sponsored Manufacturing USA institute, and the site includes CMU's Robotics Innovation Center and Pitt's BioForge biomanufacturing facility.
Bakery Square, a mixed-use office, retail and residential development on Penn Avenue, straddles East Liberty and Larimer. Startups leaving incubators often find it too expensive and settle in Lawrenceville or Garfield instead.
Suburban office parks and hospitals north of the city along I-79, including AHN's Wexford Hospital and tech firms such as Cranberry-based Accipiter Systems, a networking company that exhibited in Discovery Day 2026's defense zone.
West of the city near Pittsburgh International, Neighborhood 91 in Clinton is one of the sites local leaders name as the next home for advanced manufacturing.
What's hiring
Metro payrolls were roughly flat over the year: 1,203,500 nonfarm jobs in September 2026, down 0.5% (BLS, preliminary). The picture by sector is uneven.
The largest and steadiest employer group, at 274,400 education and health jobs. UPMC reports 100,000 staff and more than 40 hospitals; Allegheny Health Network reports 16 hospitals and 27,000 employees. Nursing, allied health, revenue cycle and health IT are constant needs.
The Pittsburgh Robotics Network counts more than 120 robotics companies and more than 120 AI companies, plus 55+ academic labs and support groups. Funding is uneven: the Network itself cut staff in September 2026 after a federal grant ended.
88,600 jobs, up 1.5% in a year, one of the few growing sectors. Robotics companies and legacy manufacturers compete for the same machinists, technicians and controls engineers.
Professional and business services hold 185,500 jobs (down 0.6%); financial activities 79,000 (up 0.9%). Accounting, finance and IT roles move steadily even when tech hiring is slow.
Mining and logging, which includes natural gas extraction, is small at 8,800 jobs but grew 6.0%. Construction fell 5.5% to 58,000, so experienced project and field staff may be easier to find than a year ago.

Offers pegged to national or Bay Area bands overshoot; offers pegged to stale local numbers lose candidates to remote coastal employers. Use the metro medians above, and when recruiting from the coasts, lead with what the salary buys here.
Under Act 32, employers with Pennsylvania worksites must withhold the local Earned Income Tax and Local Services Tax, and a remote employee's home counts as a worksite. The LST is capped at $52 a year. This sits on top of the state's flat 3.07% personal income tax.
Since January 1, 2025, Pennsylvania's Fair Contracting for Health Care Practitioners Act voids new noncompetes for physicians, CRNPs, CRNAs and physician assistants unless they last one year or less, and never if the practitioner was dismissed. Employers must notify certain patients of a departing practitioner within 90 days.
Pennsylvania does not require salary ranges in job postings. Its Wage Payment and Collection Law does require telling employees at hire their rate of pay and when and where they will be paid. Remote postings open to people in pay-transparency states may still need ranges.
"Robotics" alone attracts everyone. Name the layer (perception, planning, controls, test), the platform and language, and whether the role touches hardware. Specific posts get fewer, better applicants.
Defense is a visible part of the market; the Pittsburgh Robotics Network's Discovery Day 2026 had a dedicated defense zone. If a role needs a Secret or TS clearance, say so up front. Careerscape recruits cleared professionals for federal and defense contractors.
For job seekers
Whether you build robots or run a hospital floor, a few local realities help.
Try perception, autonomy, motion planning, controls, simulation, test engineer and field operations. Some robotics jobs are simply listed as software engineer roles.
Pittsburgh has seen Argo AI shut down, and Uber's self-driving unit, ATG, was sold to Aurora in 2021. Keep your skills portable and your network wide, and treat health care and manufacturing as real options for engineering and IT careers.
Field test, prototype build and mechatronics technician roles are a route into robotics without a four-year degree. The metro median for electro-mechanical and mechatronics technologists was $60,200 in May 2025.
