Oil and gas recruiters for Denver's engineering and science teams

Denver has petroleum engineers and geoscientists at more than four times their national share, but the crews who drill and service its wells mostly work in Weld County, a separate metro. Careerscape recruits for Denver energy employers from a national, fully remote staff of recruiters organized by industry.

Talent depth

Denver's energy bench: engineers and scientists at 4x the U.S. share

Few places concentrate subsurface talent like Denver. Petroleum engineers have a location quotient of 4.83 and geoscientists 4.21, so each makes up more than four times their national share of local jobs. Environmental engineers (2.29) and chemical engineers (1.88) are also deep, and the metro's 2,860 architectural and engineering managers earn a $191,440 median, about 12% above the U.S.

Field and plant roles are another story. BLS did not publish a Denver figure for oil and gas roustabouts, and refinery operators and gaugers (LQ 0.14) and power plant operators (0.28) are rare. Petroleum engineers ($174,580) and geoscientists ($120,480) earn well above the U.S. medians of $144,910 and $101,920. Wind turbine technicians earn $74,740 here, above the $64,120 national median, while electrical engineers sit near the U.S. at $119,020. Jobs and median annual pay for the Denver-Aurora-Centennial, CO metro area, all employers, from the BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey (May 2025). “Vs. U.S.” compares with the national median. Concentration is the BLS location quotient: above 1.0 means the job makes up a bigger share of local employment than it does nationally.

Office and field

Why the wells are in Weld County and the engineers are in Denver

The Wattenberg field in the Denver Basin covers more than 2,000 square miles between Denver and Greeley, and most of it lies in Weld County. Weld County is its own federal metro area, the Greeley MSA. So the BLS Denver figures on this page mostly count the people who plan and manage wells, not the crews who drill and service them.

Denver is where companies are run. Ovintiv and SM Energy are headquartered in Denver, and SM Energy completed an all-stock merger with Civitas Resources in January 2026. Ovintiv's operations are now mainly in the Permian Basin and Canada's Montney: it sold its Uinta Basin assets in January 2025 and completed its purchase of Canada's NuVista Energy in early 2026. Chevron became a major DJ Basin operator when it bought Noble Energy in October 2020. Many Denver subsurface roles support assets in other states or in Canada.

That shapes the search. For a reservoir engineer or a geologist, Denver's pool is one of the deepest we see, and environmental engineers are plentiful too. For a completions superintendent or production foreman, you are recruiting in Weld County and the field towns, or from other basins. Colorado's job-posting rules apply either way; our Denver staffing guide covers them.

Talent pipeline

Where Front Range energy talent comes from

The schools, labs and adjacent industries that feed Denver's energy employers.

  • Colorado School of Mines, Golden

Mines is the region's main source of petroleum, geological and mining engineers. Its geophysics department dates to 1926 and marks its centennial this year, and the school also offers graduate programs in carbon capture, nuclear engineering and advanced energy systems.

  • National Laboratory of the Rockies, Golden

The Energy Department renamed the National Renewable Energy Laboratory on December 1, 2025 and gave it a broader applied-energy mission across all sources. Its grid, storage and systems researchers are a source of senior technical hires.

  • Transmission build-outs

Colorado regulators approved Xcel Energy's Colorado Power Pathway, a large transmission project across eastern Colorado, in 2022. Engineers and construction managers from that work know Colorado permitting and terrain.

  • Mining and aerospace

Newmont, the gold miner, is headquartered in Denver, and the Front Range has a large aerospace base. Both share geologists, environmental engineers and controls specialists with energy employers.

How it works

How a Denver energy search runs with a remote recruiter

Careerscape has no Colorado office. Our energy recruiters work by phone and video and share candidates through the Employer Portal.

  1. 01

Define the asset and the location

Tell us whether the role supports Weld County wells, assets in another basin, or a utility or renewables project. That decides whether we search Denver's engineer pool or field markets.

  2. 02

    Set the pay range first

Colorado requires pay ranges in job postings. Use the BLS medians above as a floor check: Denver petroleum engineers and geoscientists earn well above U.S. medians.

  3. 03

    Search and screen

We approach active and passive candidates, then screen for basin experience, software, licenses, field rotation tolerance and relocation.

  4. 04

    Review a shortlist

You see pre-screened candidates in a private Employer Portal, request interviews and leave feedback in one place.

  5. 05

    Pick the hire type

Direct hire for core engineering and science roles; contract or contract-to-hire for project, permitting or field supervision work.

FAQ

Questions Denver energy employers ask

Why is it hard to find oilfield workers in Denver?

Because most of them work outside the Denver metro. The Wattenberg field lies mostly in Weld County, which BLS treats as the separate Greeley metro area, and BLS did not publish a Denver estimate for roustabouts. Denver's strength is the office side: petroleum engineers and geoscientists at more than four times the national share. Field searches should start in Weld County and other producing basins.

How much do petroleum engineers make in Denver?

The median annual wage for petroleum engineers in the Denver-Aurora-Centennial metro was $174,580 in May 2025, according to BLS, against a U.S. median of $144,910. The metro had about 900 petroleum engineers, a location quotient of 4.83. Geoscientists earned a $120,480 median. Senior reservoir and asset roles usually pay above the median.

Which Colorado schools train energy engineers?

Colorado School of Mines in Golden is the main one. It trains petroleum, geological and mining engineers, runs a geophysics department founded in 1926, and offers graduate programs in carbon capture and nuclear engineering. The National Laboratory of the Rockies, also in Golden, is a source of grid and energy systems talent.

Can a remote agency recruit Denver energy roles well?

For most of these roles, yes. Subsurface engineers and geoscientists are a national, networked pool, and many Denver roles support assets in other states anyway. Careerscape's energy recruiters work remotely, search beyond Colorado for scarce field and plant roles, and give you a pre-screened shortlist. See our energy recruiting services for the options.

What happened to NREL in Golden?

On December 1, 2025, the U.S. Department of Energy renamed the National Renewable Energy Laboratory the National Laboratory of the Rockies. The lab stays in Golden. The department said it now has a broader applied-energy mission covering all energy sources rather than mainly renewables, with a focus on manufacturing, costs and rising energy demand.
