Bar admission
Admission rules decide how quickly a lateral from another state can practice here. This is the Massachusetts sequence as of October 2026; the Board of Bar Examiners has the final word on any individual application.
Settle whether the hire must hold Massachusetts admission on day one, within a set period, or not at all, and put it in the posting. It is the first question lateral candidates ask, and a vague answer loses good people from other states.
Massachusetts gives the Uniform Bar Examination through February 2028, and its UBE passing score is 270. A candidate who sat the UBE elsewhere may be able to apply by score transfer instead of retaking an exam, subject to the board's other requirements.
Since July 2026, Massachusetts accepts transferred NextGen scores of 620 or higher, its NextGen passing score. That opens the door to graduates who sat the first NextGen exam in Connecticut, Maryland or another early state and reached that score.
The Board of Bar Examiners will replace the UBE with the NextGen exam starting in July 2028, and Massachusetts will keep a state-specific admission requirement alongside it. Build that into offers for students who will graduate in 2028 or later.
